Job Search
Use this as a template for your resume. This resume template was provided to me by Georgetown's MBA program, and is successfully used by all students to find work. It is fairly industry standard in the United States.
Resume Overview
Unless you have a Noble Prize, your resume should probably not be longer than 1 page.
Research your industry to understand if you should list dates on your college graduation. Your age can be easily reverse engineered from this and could be used against you.
Resumes do not need an "Objective/Summary" section
Do not list your address, simply the city or state of residence
Do include something fun you do in the "Special Skills" section, like "Skydiving Certificate" or "Horse Rescue Volunteer".
Yes - LinkedIn is important. Not having a social/online presence is sometimes worse than having a bad online presence.
The STAR Method
Your resume bullet points should follow the STAR Method - Situation, Task, Action, Result. This approach is often used when answering interview questions, and is perfect to practice with when writing your bullet points.
How to Write a STAR Method Resume (with Examples)
Where possible, combine your bullet points to show results. Remember, if it is worth putting on your resume, it has a worthwhile result. Even if this result cannot be quantified, be sure to document what happened. For example:
... resulting in higher customer satisfaction.
... resulting in increased employee morale.
Industries
There are three main types of companies -
Corporate
Government
Nonprofit
A fourth could be "Academic" as it falls under each one - operating like a corporation, coded as a nonprofit, getting government money.
Each one has benefits and detractors. As you consider your career, note which industries you are most interested in, which you would like to enter, which you are most well poised for.
For example, as an Accountant, you might find the type of company you work for irrelevant. Or, as a process driven person, you might find Nonprofits intolerable.
Use Your Network
In my career, every single job I have ever been hired for was not a job I applied for. Every job was a referral. This phenomenon is only getting more powerful, so Use. Your. Network.
The reason you are even on this page is because you used your network! Great job! Now, pick up those bootstraps, and email everyone who owes you a favor, post on LinkedIn, and start texting: find the people who are hiring, or who know someone who is hiring.
Do not allow yourself to feel like a bad person who is wasting their time.
In general, people like helping each other. So, let them help you.
Companies to Consider
Large companies that have a larger, globally distributed workforce, are a great place to find remote and hybrid work. In addition, the stability of a large company guarantees long term employment.
You will notice a lot of these companies are in technology. Do not worry, you do not need to know or understand the product to work there in the support functions.
Companies with an * denote companies where I have a contact and can potentially lead to an internal referral.
The Fortune 1000 is a great place to look for other companies.
Interviews are dates. Not an interrogation.
When you are invited for an interview, this means you can do the job. There should be no doubt in your mind that you are not qualified. Interviews are tests to see what kind of a person you are and whether or not the team wants to sit next to you for 1/3 of their lives.
You are interviewing the company just as much as the company is interviewing you. Remember that.
Remember your worth, everything you bring to the table.
